Production

During our filming of our characters we used lighting that would only show the spotlighted the characters. We used this effect because it would make the audience more focused on the characters and thats why we have a black background. the location was in the sixth form drama studio but we had an advantage when filming because we had the lighting.

while filming we got our actress Erin to do some of hr choreographed dance in which she used a lot of movement. her moment suited the pace of the song because we were playing the song in the background.

During the filming we had to change the lighting to get a clear view of both actors. While filming we also got both actors use some threatening actions that we have included in the narrative. The image below shows our actor Jamie pushing Erin while she's dancing. we did this to show the bad side of the character however, the lighting came in handy because it makes out that Erin is the good character  and Jaimie is the bad one because of the high and low key lighting.

Second cut

our second cut includes quicker shots as well as lip syncing by the male actor. A variety of camera angles are used which is an improvement from our first edit. We have also managed to keep the footage in time with the music so whenever the music gains pace, we then include shorter clips.

First cut

For our first piece of editing we included some of the choreography of our actress in the music video and some footage featuring our male actor observing the dancing. what needs improvement is shortening the footage to about a second because it's too long. We also need some lip syncing as well because we need more footage of our male actor.

Weather for filming

The weather won't be too bad when filming our forest scene with our one actor because the weather will help the lighting and it will make the scene look intense which is what we want to achieve. The temperature isn't too cold which will help with our filming because the effects of the weather will not distract us from getting the best quality out of the camera's.

Test footage

By going out and practise filming we have learnt how to make affective footage by timing the movement of the actor with beat of the song. We have also learnt how different camera angles should follow each other tom make a music video look for interesting

Creating a brand

Bastille's logo is quite unique because it's there's only a triangle and the name of the band underneath the shape. The triangle has different meanings but it's most well known is the three corners which is the christian faith, the holy trinity-father, son and holy ghost. Bastille's songs have a lot of different meanings but most of their songs are about death, relationships and religion. I believe that the logo for the band is black because most of their songs such as "Send them off" or "Pompei" have a dark kind of style which one songs narrative is being taking over by demons and the other is about someone who is trapped.

I chose the idea of hands praying to be part of my logo because some of the song meanings from Bastille are about religion of someones beliefs. i like the use of both hands used in prayer because it creates a powerful message and it also, creates some intensity because a prayer is used by billions of people that if it was used as a logo it would appeal to some people.

The logo below is from a tropical house DJ named KYGO. This logo is considered a hipster type of logo because of the 'X' which looks like various graphic elements (icons, initials, dates, heraldic symbols) that are placed around “X” sign. i am thinking about sampling parts of a hipster logo into to my own logo because because it's trendy and quite modern so it can appeal to a young audience.

Below is a rough example of what my logo will look like but still needs improvements. What needs improvements on my logo is colour as it is quite dull and boring however, i will be changing the colour of the triangle to a cloud that will represent the artists personality. Another improvement will be including text in the triangle, possibly have one letter in each corner that will represent the name of the artist but i have not chosen one so far.
The name of my artist is called Midnight Preacher. I have chosen this name because it's a unique pairing of words and it works well with my logo because it kind f has a relatable religious feeling to it  because my logo includes two hands in a prayer.

Locations and actor planning

We will have two actors in our music video, Jamie Simms, and Erin wilson. These two actors will be demonstrating the good and bad points of a dysfunctional relationship. For our music video we will include several locations fro many different scenes. One of the locations that we are having our music video set in is the drama studio at castle sixth form. The drama studio will include a lot of space where we can use the music video narrative to it's full advantage. The drama studio will be useful to use in our video because some parts in the music video will include some dance choreography which space is required and the setting will make the performance of the dance more realistic. We still need permission for the drama studio.

James's house will be used for many scenes for when we film the close relationship of the two characters in the music video. This part of the narrative will have both characters using there spare to hang out with each other and we chose this location because having both character looking like they live together make the video more realistic. The location is also useful because it is not set near the castle sixth form which makes the video quite dull and boring because local places are quite original. For this location we have been granted permission to use the house.

A forrest by the Mundy's is another location where we will be filming to create more drama in the narrative because the character will be lost and scared making the music video more intense throughout the narrative. The forrest location is also a useful location because it is a place where the character will be alone and the narrative is about the male character trying to find his ex girlfriend but he is lost and he doesn't know how to find her.

Learning comment: From this task we have now decided what locations we are going to use in our music video. We are going to use three locations for our final idea. we decided on the locations on what suits best for the narrative.

Editing Practise

Initial ideas

Learning comment: from planning i have learnt what ideas we can include in our music video. By mind mapping it has helped me and my group gather ideas and it has also helped to pick what fits best for the music video. we have included different section and have given what each member of the group would like to include in our video. we have chosen key areas that he would like to brainstorm on such as the narrative, camera angles, actors, and location.

Lyrics analysis

Learning comment: From the analysis of the lyrics i have found out what they mean and how it is used in the video. i have also learnt that the music video doesn't follow the lyrics. I have also learnt that the lyrics can give us ideas for the narrative of our music video.

Fashion and Props planning

Learning comment: from this task we have now sorted out what costumes our actor and actress is going to wear. This was also useful because we the clothes that we will be using will fit in with the narrative and it will show what kind of personalities of the characters we are trying to portray.

Slow Motion

Learning comment: From using the slow motion technique it has given me and my group ideas for the use of slow motion for our music. Both videos were taken on an iPhone which it managed to give the footage a decent effect by starting the video off fast then slowing it down towards the end.

Genre Research

- The music video is completely narrative based and has no artist representation to it. Song is about two homosexuals being chased down by thugs because of their sexuality. The music video has a powerful narrative which highlights the difficulties of being gay in this society. The video does not just focus on the negatives of being gay, they also show the powerful love that the couple have for each other.

The music video includes a lot of cuts and jump cuts which helps the audience to see more of the narrative in three minutes. The music video also has some continuity editing to show the scene of people running. This is editing technique is one way of keeping the audience up with the narrative. For the whole music video the director has chosen to place the film in black and white. the editing for the running scene is fast paced show the frantic nature of the situations they are desperate to get away from the thugs chasing them. This shows the audience that this event has already happened and it is part of our history. The dark colours also show the evil that is within the world and what the couple in this video have to overcome to be excepted. Low angle shots are use for the gang to show that they are the dominant characters. the low angle also emphasises the dangerous nature of the gang because they are overpowering the shot with a dark background.

The song is a about a man not getting the woman he adores which he is alone. The visuals in the video portray this well because the facial expressions from the artist suggests he feels deserted and lonely. the Music video is quite slow but it flows brilliantly with the tempo of the song is slow as well. When the two characters meet, the boy singing is put in the dark, as he becomes sad and upset that he has lost the girl he loves. Whilst the two characters who are now together are covered in bright lights. There are a lot of close ups of the artist Calum Scott. This is effective because it shows the artists pain and emotion in the artists face as he is standing on his own. The artist closes his eyes throughout the song showing his emotion and putting his feeling across to the audience.

Learning comment: from this task i have learnt that different genre's of music can portray different narratives in a music video which the Indie genre is likely to be a narrative about a relationship and how lonely that characters are in the music video how much they miss the other half. I have also learnt that the genre for the music is key because there will be a certain amount of camera angles used  and how some areas of Mise en scene will make the music video successful.

Permission

Video/Lyrics

Spoken]
So, what would you little maniacs like to do first?

[Verse 1]
Watching through my fingers
Watching through my fingers
Shut my eyes and count to ten
It goes in one ear out the other
One ear out the other
Burning bright right till the end
Now you’ll be missing from the photographs
Missing from the photographs

[Verse 2]
Watching through my fingers
Watching through my fingers
In my thoughts you’re far away and you are whistling a melody
Whistling a melody
Crystallizing clear as day, oh I can picture you so easily
Picture you so easily

[Pre-chorus]
What’s gonna be left of the world if you’re not in it
What’s gonna be left of the world oh

[Chorus]
Every minute and every hour
I miss you, I miss you, I miss you more!
Every stumble and each misfire
I miss you, I miss you, I miss you more!

Watching through my fingers
Watching through my fingers

[Verse 3]
Caught off guard by your favorite song
I’ll be dancing at a funeral, dancing at a funeral
Sleeping in the clothes you love
It’s such a shame we had to see them burn
Shame we had to see them burn

[Pre-chorus]
What’s gonna be left of the world if you’re not in it
What’s gonna be left of the world oh

[Chorus]
Every minute and every hour
I miss you, I miss you, I miss you more
Every stumble and each misfire
I miss you, I miss you, I miss you more

[Spoken]
If you want to be a party animal
You have to learn to live in the jungle.
Now stop worrying and go and get dressed.

[Bridge]
You might have to excuse me
I’ve lost control of all my senses
And you might have to excuse me
I’ve lost control of all my words
So get drunk, call me a fool, put me in my place, put me in my place
Pick me up, up off the floor, put me in my place, put me in my place

[Chorus]
Every minute and every hour
I miss you, I miss you, I miss you more
Every stumble and each misfire
I miss you, I miss you, I miss you more
[Outro]
Watching through my fingers, watching through my fingers
Cause every minute and every hour
I miss you, I miss you, I miss you more

Audience research/ Task 2

This music video is about violence, drug use, drinking and relationships Goodwin's theory of disjuncture applies to this video as the lyrics have little relation to what is happening on screen. Shores theories of simulated experience, anaesthetization Violence through chic, adolescent male fantasies and immediate gratification can be applied to 'We can't stop'. This demonstrates today's society and relation to youth culture.

Eminem's "Without Me" music video demonstrates the genre characteristics' of a hip hop video because it features the star, Eminem. In this video, Eminem represents an archetypal rapper because he uses a lot of the now known conventions such as women around him, as we saw at the start of the video where he is in a bed with two women, he also uses a lot of hand gestures in certain parts of the video. The first time we see a link between the music and the visuals is in the track in the verse,"Guess who's back, back againShady's Back, tell a friend, Guess who's back, guess who's backGuess who's back, guess who's back". During this we see comic characters "gossiping" and telling their friends that Shady is back. This fits well throughout the video as the comic book theme is used all the way through. Also they is a swipe pan effect in the transition between the comic characters.

the narrative of this video follows the life of a washed up heavy metal band member. We see how his life has taken a turn for the worst and how life in itself has become a challenge for the unnamed character. The acting in this video is truly amazing, Even in the short video you do connect with the character. there are many aspects of this video are very clever. The very first shot shows the ending of this character, We see his body floating lifelessly in a swimming pool. This is a method of foreshadowing that i didn't realise until i watched it a second time. At this stage of the video the music is calm and the primary instrument is Ed's acoustic guitar. The music and the images link well at this point as once he is dead it is all calm, He isn't in pain anymore. However when he is alive we hear the heavy drum and bass and see images of how rough and wild his life got.

Learning comment: from this task I have learnt different meanings for different types of music videos  and also how different genres introduce certain narratives and including a variety of stereotypes in music videos.

Artist/Record label

Learning comment: from this task I have found information about the band that our group is doing for our music video. We have also searched up the record companies that represent the band.

Thinking of a concept/song

Credit: Alistair Grimsell

Credit: Kit Fielder

At the end of our analysis our group decided to choose the song Good Grief by Bastille. We have chosen this song because the tune is upbeat and fast and the narrative for the music video can be filmed anywhere which is a huge boost for when our group start to get footage because we have not decided on the location yet.

Music Video Analysis

Task 1

Task 2

Ed Sheeran-A Team

The narrative in this song is quite sad because the main character is a homeless girl who struggles through life and has to sell her body to make a living. as shown in the narrative, the girl is sad and emotional throughout the video. Goodwin's theory has shown that there is a relationship between the music and the lyrics itself. the song is illustrative and sends a powerful message through the lyrics about people who struggle to make money and are stuck in poverty. Using Mise en scene the video includes low key lighting to create a dull atmosphere and it also gives the impression that the song is not going to be a happy one. the woman in this video has a sleeping bag and a pillow. This suggests the girl is homeless. the girl is also taking drugs suggesting that she is trying to find some escapism because her life isn't great in the narrative. The low key lighting produces a dark feeling which helps the narrative progress because it give the effect of more drama.

Kygo-Firestone

This song is all about using special effects to create different dimensions which the main character in the video has to go through these dimensions to find the girl he loves. the video shows uses of gratification because there is an idea of escapism in this song because the video includes different settings the look like paradise. the song is illustrative as song is about a couple ruling the world which the narrative in the video is about a guy trying to find his other half. Through the Mise en scene we can see that the video starts of with low key lighting when the guy is lost but when he finds the girl that he loves high key lighting is shown to create a happier and lighter mood for the audience. Todorov's theory has shown that the equilibrium began when the couple were kissing but the girl fled seconds later which shown a disruption but was restored when the main character finds his way back to her by traveling different dimensions.

Eminem-Phenomenal
Goodwin's theory has been shown through out the video when the lyrics in the introduction started off with "i'm phenomenal" which the music video is mostly a fighting scene throughout the video. the video also presents the main character who is the artist as an all powerful in human being. this video is a performance based video as their is action throughout the video. the narrative is about Eminem waking up with superpowers but has an erased memory so he doesn't know whats happening to him as he fights off people who are using him for scientific research. This video features a lot of camera movement as it captures many different angles of fight but it also includes a shaky effect almost like the camera is handheld to make the video look more dramatic.

Years and Years-Eyes wide shut
The narrative of the of the song is about not seeing what the world has come which video includes the main singer walking past damaged and destroyed buildings. the video starts off with low key lighting in a destroyed building. This creates a certain mood that makes the audience intrigued. This is another use of gratifications as this is a way of escapism. The narrative is also about closing your eyes and blocking out everyone which is another example of escapism. This video is trying recreate real life events and this is one way of sending a message out to the audience.

Coldplay-Hymn for the weekend
This video is very creative because the setting in India. the narrative is about the lead singer of the band Coldplay 'Chris Martin'. This video takes the complexity and vastness of Indian culture and squeezes it into the long-romanticized Western narrative of said culture. India, yoga, and Hinduism. Blumler and Katz's uses of gratification theory has been shown in this video which the music video is set in a beautiful Indian town featuring smiles all around and a colourful setting implying that it has a sort of escapism to the video because the setting is amazing and wornderful.

Task 3

Learning comment: from this piece of research i have learnt different aspects of music videos by looking at four key areas such as Mise en scene, sound, editing, and camera angles. These four areas have helped to understand what makes a successful music video.

Music Video Research Analysis of Student Videos, digipaks and adverts

The use of props had a massive effect on the music video because it created a mood that matched the song. What else worked well was the the production and the people in the music video because they were able to use props to create different scenes which in my opinion was a great affect. the timing and the way the group of people go into each scene was impressive and the way they did made the narrative of the music video fascinating. the video is very creative which barely any special effects was needed and props was used to create the setting. the clothing fitted the setting which the singer because it was a nice flowery dress and setting started outside in a garden. the other people who are moving the props to create the setting are all dressed in black. This is done so the audience know the role of the other members of the cast. location is used with props and a little bit of editing and different effects such as the background lighting. the camera angles have been used in a correct manner which there is a variety of them. The narrative element works with the performance of the artist because the song is about someone in a relationship who has been let down by the other partner and this was brilliantly acted out as text was used, body language  and the positioning of characters explained what the narrative is about.

The use of camera angles worked well in this video because there was a variety of camera angles used which made the music video more appealing. the layout of the video was also interesting because a lot of the action such was split into one scene. this was creative and interesting because two thing were happening the same time making it enjoyable to watch. Although having three screens where the actors were dancing was creative i think that they overused this effect which made this music video a bit predictable. the clothing used was excellent because there were many different outfits used on the main singer during the video to show different scenes. the choreography was good for the dance routines which made the video a lot more interesting than others. the location was set in a dance studio but what made the location interesting was that the lighting was changed which created different moods of the characters. the narrative was clearly shown as both women were at war with each other by saying why there better than each other. This was shown by using body language and facial expressions.

What worked well with this music video was the way they made the main singers presented in close ups and the way the camera was zoomed in on them which makes the audience focus on the singers but what made this video less appealing was that there was not enough camera movement and also the fact that the narrative wasn't clearly shown because there wasn't enough movement from the actors which made this video quite dull. the clothes were alright because they were wearing dark colours which the tone of lighting was lowered. the location was set in a lit up area which at the start of the video shown people from different ethnicity's. The editing techniques used were not that great because was wasn't a variety of camera angles and editing used.

Learning comment: from the three videos that i have analysed the best video was 'Do My Thing' which was a pop song and the song was upbeat which made the music video appealing. From the video i would have used editing techniques as different scenes or time periods in the narrative was shown in a matter of seconds which grabbed my attention. From the video i have learnt that the use of camera angles is important because the way of using them can present characters in different ways and not using enough camera angles can make a music video boring and plain.

Advanced Editing Techniques

Learning comment: from this task i have learnt different editing techniques that could influence our music video. i have also learnt that different eating techniques can make a simple video of a persons movement into something quite fascinating to watch.

30 Cut Chorus

Learning comment:From creating this short music video I have learnt that camera angles are vital in a music video as the video would be boring and plain. I have also learnt that a narrative is crucial as the audience need to be intrigued and engaged in the video. I believe me and my group were asked to do this task so we can practise making a music video and then reflect on it. We had to do this task so can reflect on the key areas for improvement and what can make a music video appealing to an audience and how to structure a music video. The use of camera angles made the music video interesting and the use of editing for the video because the use of Match on Action created an effect that made me want to watch more of the music video. I would of liked to use more props for the character because we as a group wanted water, books and a white board pen which were not available at the time which made the video slightly different to the storyboard

Music video research analysis of Digipaks

A Digipak is a type of packaging used for CD covers or known as special editions for CD albums. The internal of the pack is made of card or paper and the external is plastic that covers the CD. A Digipak is made in a book style which it can hold CD or DVD attached to the inside. They can also include posters of the band or the singer in the Digipak also, it would include a track listings. The Digipak can be presented in a number of ways: a Digipak can be presented as 4 or 6 plate. or in terms of the layout, the CD can be in the middle and the side or if there is more than one CD, they can be next to each other or on either end. A Digipak is a way of sharing and sharing the music and the star persona.

I believe the age demographic for Digipaks are mostly adults because children and teenagers download their music because it is easier to access song on an Ipod or a smartphone. It is also cheaper to download music because you can do it illegally where website can provide a variety of songs that you can stream music to electronic devices for free. Digipaks are more expensive mainly because of the packaging and how it is presented. There are many advantages of owning a Digipak as it contains a lyrics page so the buyer can sing along to the songs and it also suggests that artist cares about the listener enjoying the lyrics. A Digipak is made for any genre type as it is a way of promoting the band or artist.

Learning comment: From this task i have learnt that Digipaks have had a massive impact for promoting bands and artists as it is a much better looking presentation than a CD cover.

What must be included in a Digipak:

- The Digipak must have a consistent 'house style', this may include colour, fonts and imagery
-The style should also clearly reflect the genre from which that artist belongs to and it should be made in high quality
-The exterior should clearly show the name of the artist and the ablbum.
-The Digipak should normally have images of the artist themselves as this makes it easily recognisable for promotion
-There should be a track list that lists all the songs on the album plus any added extras and this would usually be found on the back of the Digipak

Music video research analysis of usic websites

Learning comment: From this task I have learnt that there needs to be a certain structure to make a music website successful such as the layout, font and colour. From researching music websites I have found out how different genre types use colour and the layout of the website to suggest the type of personality that the artist may have. A music website also shows representations of artists and how fans can interact and to be closer to the band or artist.

Lip Syncing Task

Learning comment: From this task i have learnt how to stay in time with a song while it's played to make it look more realistic. I have also learnt that over exaggerating or using more movement with my mouth can create the impression that i am the one who is singing in this song. This task was important to do because it has helped me improve my timing within a song and this also gave me ideas and how to improve the lip sync video. I believe that the use of hand gestures and stretching my mouth to over exaggerate a song was good because it made the video look more realistic. If i were to change the lip sync video i would change the song as i found out a slower paced song looks more realistic when lip syncing and it's easier to keep in time. My advise about lip syncing is to over exaggerate in a song by stretching your mouth, this will make the music video more realistic.

i have learnt from the last lip sync video that the use of camera angles and location can be a massive difference when making a music video. the last lip sync video only included one location and camera angle but i have improved on a variety of areas.
Improvements:
- camera angles
- setting
- positioning
- body language
- facial expressions

The History of Music Videos

A music video or song video is a short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes.[1] Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended
to promote the sale of music recordings

Michael Jackson's Thriller is a 13-minute music video for the song of the name released on December 2, 1983. It was directed by John Landis, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Jackson. In December 2009, it was selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress along with 24 other films. It was the first, ever (and to this day, only) music video to be selected. The Registry titled Thriller as “the most famous music video of all time”. The coordinator of the National Film Preservation Board, who decides upon candidates for inclusion in the National Film Registry, Steve Legett, said “The time is right” for Thriller to be included, because of the death of Jackson that year.

The music video of Gangnam Style by recording artist Psy, was directed by Cho Soo-hyun. The music video was filmed in Seoul for 48 straight hours. The video was premiered on July 15, 2012.The music video was the first to hit 1 billion views on the video-sharing website YouTube and in June 2014 the video gained 2 billion views

Learning comment: From researching the history of music videos i have learnt that the huge development of video editing and special effects have made music videos more appealing also, being creative and out of the box can attract an audience. I found out that editing has had a massive improvement overtime and fast paced editing has made a difference to music videos because it can show more of the narrative.
